Description:Assistant Youth Services Manager - Administrative Headquarters Position Overview: Position will close no later than November 9) This position is responsible for assisting in the management of the Youth Services Department. The Assistant Youth Services Department Manager interprets and implements the youth services related goals set by the Department Manager to Storytime Specialists and branch staff that plan and implement programs for teens and children. This position performs professional duties requiring the exercise of professional skill, initiative, and independent judgment. This is a full-time overtime exempt position with a salary range from $40,212.00 - 58,3015.00 plus benefits.
Responsibilities:Reports to: Youth Services Manager Supervises: Storytime Specialist, Youth Service Assistants Leadership Expectations: Supports, promotes, implements, and makes decisions based on established Library policies, guidelines, and programs Knowledge and support of the principles of intellectual freedom including the Library Bill of Rights and the Freedom to Read Statement Models excellent customer service attitude and delivery, supporting a collaborative and inclusive workplace Consistently exhibits leadership qualities and professional attitudes and behaviors Consistently acknowledges and appreciates each Library employee’s contributions Develops a high-performance work team in an empowered environment Maintains an attractive, safe and welcoming environment Maintains regular and dependable personal attendance and punctuality based on commitment to the Library Establishes and maintains supportive working relationships with co-workers and other departments/branches Plans and allocates library resources systematically Consistently meets expectations set forth in the Exempt Employee Expectations Document Essential Job Functions: Supervision of staff under the guidance of the Department Manager Schedules and coordinates the placement of Storytime Specialists Provides and/or arranges appropriate training for Youth Services Storytime Specialists and branch storytime staff Assists in hiring and interviewing Youth Services Department employees, sits in on and provides input for employee evaluations, and can provide disciplinary action if necessary Communicates effectively and disseminates information in a timely manner Develops and maintains collaborative relationship with the Department Manager Supervises all Youth Services staff in the absence of the Department Manager Plans and coordinates functions of Department Assists in developing and coordinating implementation of department services Plans, coordinates, and participates in workshops and in-service training activities for Storytime Specialists and branch youth services staff Assists in planning, coordinating, and organizing District-wide reading incentive programs Performs the duties of Storytime Specialist as necessary Helps develop guidelines and standards for youth programming in the branches Works with system-wide youth services staff to provide youth related Library services Promotes the Library in a positive way Works in cooperation with various Departments at MCPL Headquarters in order to work toward achievement of Strategic Plan goals Assists in providing approval of branch programming for youth by helping insure programs are geared toward achievement of the Key Point Indicators within the Strategic Plan for MCPL Demonstrates fiscal responsibility in management of department budgets Attends meetings and conducts meetings as required Attends and conducts performance evaluations as required Possession of a valid driver license and a reliable personal vehicle for use in carrying out the duties of this position including transportation of materials and equipment(mileage reimbursed) Non-essential Job Functions: Participates and contributes to system-wide Library committees and activities Participates in local and state organizations for youth service, such as but not limited to Missouri Library Association Recommends books, periodicals and other materials for youth collections Required Skills: Excellent customer service and problem-solving abilities Exceptional interpersonal skills A collaborative leadership style Ability to learn and subsequently train staff on youth service related topics Effective verbal and written communication skills Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently Must be able to work with frequent interruptions and/or changing priorities. Excellent organizational skills Thorough knowledge of trends relating to youth service Regular and dependable personal attendance and punctuality are essential for demonstrating leadership and accomplishing Library and Department goals Successfully handles matters of conflict Performs professional duties requiring the exercise or professional skill, initiative, and independent judgment with regards to the Library’s written guidelines on empowerment Essential Physical Requirements to be accomplished With or Without Reasonable Accommodation are: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing which permits the incumbent to communicate well with all constituents. Sufficient vision which permits the incumbent to produce and review a wide variety of library materials, written correspondence, reports and related materials in both electronic and hard copy form. Sufficient manual dexterity which permits the incumbent to operate a keyboard and process library materials. Sufficient personal mobility which permits the incumbent to monitor, supervise, and perform assigned library operations, and to attend Library district, community, and public meetings at various locations locally, regionally and nationally. The incumbent must be able to lift up to 40 pounds, push and pull carts weighing up to 40 pounds, bend, stoop and reach shelving from floor level to 6 feet high. Sufficient tolerance for dust and mold which permits the incumbent to work with books and other library materials as well as working in older buildings. Minimum Qualifications:Bachelor’s Degree with coursework in Child Development, Psychology or related fields required 1 year of supervisory experience required 1 year of library experience preferred Proven experience in organization skills and project coordination required Demonstrated intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office software required Experience with library organization, methods and practices preferred Knowledge regarding best outside vendor practices preferred
